U.S. airlines sue EU over emissions trading
According to an announcement on aviainform.org, the United States Air Transport Association (ATA) - which represents US air carriers - and three US airlines sre to sue the European Union over its Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) writes Dow Jones Newswire.

The ATA, along with American Airlines, Continental Airlines and United Airlines, has launched a court action in London after stating that the ETS "violated the US-EU bilateral Air Transport Agreement of 2007 and the Kyoto Protocol". The ATA says it is necessary "in order to preserve our members' right to challenge implementation of the EU ETS as applied to aviation.

The air cargo industry will face soon new costs as additional safety rules should apply under the EU Regulation No. 300/2008 by the end of April 2010. "We therefore expect that   the opposite will happen of what the EU really targets as an object of it's policy, fears air freight analyst Dirk Steiger of the Frankfurt-based Aviainform.
