Indonesian state-run Merpati Nusantara airline is going to purchase 15 as yet unidentified aircraft from China, Xinhua reported. Indonesian State-Owned Enterprises Minister Mustafa Abubakar said Indonesian government has already imported two of the 15 aircraft in a deal to be concluded by year end. Indonesia has high potential in aviation, according to the report. As the largest archipelago country in the world with more than 17,500 islands, it is reported by its Transport Ministry that less than four per cent of its 238 million people travel by plane. The report made no mention of the type of aircraft being purchased. But in a report last year in the People's Daily, it was said that Merpati signed a contract in 2006 with Xian Aircraft to purchase 15 turboprop Xinzhou Modern Ark MA-60 passenger planes.
