Germany's Frankfurt Airport has made additional land available for air cargo use. Fraport, owner and manager of the airport, has issued a worldwide call for expressions of interest from the logistics industry for use of 27ha suitable for cargo operations. Some 3ha of hall space will be on offer after the first phase of development, due for completion between 2013 and 2014, with that figure tripling in subsequent phases. Fraport said individual operations of varying size and shape would be considered with freight halls of 3ha to 2.5ha included in initial plans for the new CargoCity South expansion area. “Airfreight is booming due to the increasing integration of the German economy and the international division of labour,” said Herbert Mai, Fraport’s executive board member responsible for real estate. “At the same time, global supply chains are becoming increasingly complex and requirements for efficient and expeditious cargo handling are rising rapidly."
