| Associations - IATA: December rebound on air cargo volumes after lacklustre 2011 |

December is the only bright spot on 2011's air cargo volumes after declines for the year despite some reduction in freighters in the global fleet. According to the latest figures from International Air Transport Association (IATA), during the year 2011 load factor dropped 45.9 per cent against a 4.1 per cent increase in capacity due to the introduction of twin-aisle passenger aircraft flooding the market. Cargo markets during December rebounded slightly with domestic up 3.2 per cent and international down 1.5 per cent month on month. However compared to same month in December, domestic freight was up 5.5 per cent, Passenger volume fared best, increasing 6.3 per cent from 2010 against capacity increases of 5.9 per cent with international strong at 6.9 per cent year on year, but it was still flat for the last four months of 2011, growing only 1.2 per cent. "Improving business confidence and encouraging news from the US economy are heartening developments," said IATA director general Tony Tyler. "It is far too early to start predicting a soft landing for 2012" but should the eurozone crisis remain unresolved it is certain to tip the industry into the red, he said.
