Frankfurt ranks first in 2009 aircargo imports

January 2010 - Frankfurt was the leading airport for 2009 air cargo imports into Europe. This was presented in an analysis, carried out by aviainform. “Our target was to identify the development of the major air trade lanes into Europe during the global crisis”, so Dirk Steiger, Principal of the Germany based specialized consultants in researching market data, trends and developments of the Global Air Transport Community

As per the company’s current records and information, the worldwide tonnage flown in airfreight was down to 26.6m metric tons, minus 8.5 per cent less than in 2008. We have noted the highest drop in demand in North America with volume minus 15.6 per cent compared to 2008. European airfreight demand was down minus 10.1 per cent. Asia/Pacific, by far the largest and most dynamic market for airfreight was also not able to contribute positive figures and fell by minus 4.5 per cent. Latin American airfreight was down to 1.7m metric tons, equivalent to minus 15.1 per cent while Africa and the Middle East countries fell by minus 0.6 per cent, down to 1.8m metric tons. The statistic does neither include domestic traffic nor courier and small package / express freight.

“In the Top20 league, FRA was clearly ahead of its rivalling European airports”, so Steiger, “Especially trade from Chinese and other major Asian origins have been the driver behind this development - it seems that the CargoCity concept in Frankfurt pays its dividends now”.

The largest trade lane from North America to Europe was, as expected New York into London, while Latin Americas largest trade lane into Europe was the Sao Paulo into Frankfurt route. The strongest trade lanes from the Middle East was Dubai into London and Amsterdam. For traffic ex Africa (Johannesburg) and from the Indian Subcontinent (Mumbai) Frankfurt was again the first choice of air freight shipments in 2009.
