Europe’s Top10 Forwarders – Getting bigger again

 Market share of the Top10 increased

The European Airfreight Forwarding Premier league has again increased its share of market: with reference to their scheduled export cargo, the market share of the Top10 players in 2009 reached 49.8 per cent, a 0.2 per cent surplus versus 2008.

Seven out of the ten are European-based forwarders while the three remaining companies are US-based. While Schenker, a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn is not yet listed on the Stock Exchange all other providers are public listed. DHL Global Forwarding remained as the undisputed leader in Europe, with DB Schenker and Kuehne+Nagel to follow. If only measured by scheduled common air carriage, Panalpina ranks 4th in Europe. Once these forwarder’s own dedicated airlift is included, the picture slightly changes in improving DHL’s position to it’s nearest rival Schenker, even if Schenker makes also use of dedicated airlift.

A similar situation appears on Kuehne+Nagel and Panalpina: because of the massive dedicated airlift used by Panalpina, the large difference between them and Kuehne is going to disappear. On the remaining list of Europe’s Top Forwarders, only the forwarding arm of UPS has access to an “own” air network, borrowed from it’s express subsidiary. As a side note, all Top10 candidates have been in this shortlist a year ago. But we foresee two extremely dynamic candidates (Agility and CEVA) which might become shortlist candidates at the end of this year.

Results from our poll:
With nearly 600 responses received from our visitors, nearly half of them (48.4%) made the right judgement, while 22.6% expected bigger gains in market share. Nearly 10 per cent of our visitors estimated that the “big guys” have lost market share (9.7%) while about one-fifth (19.3%) expected no change or was uncertain. Having such a good audience we look very much forward to the results of our recent reader's poll.
